Katie Smullen: Assistant Principal 361- 3811
Dear Parents and Students –
My name is Katie Smullen and I am happy to serve as the Assistant Principal at McNeel, home of the Lancers! I grew up in Beloit and graduated from Beloit Memorial High School. I then earned my Bachelors of Arts at Marquette University where I majored in Interdisciplinary Studies and Education. Ready for a new adventure, I traveled to the Marshall Islands where I taught 6th grade and then high school as a Jesuit Volunteer for two years. After swimming with sharks and making wonderful friends, I moved to Birmingham, Alabama with my sister. There I taught 6th grade Social Studies and Science and learned with my students as we traveled to the Civil Rights Institute and listened to the histories of freedom riders. Studying in Mexico during my summers (Veracruz and Cuernevaca), I experienced the beautiful Mexican culture and practiced my Spanish skills.
Finally, I returned to my home state to earn my Masters degree at University of Wisconsin – Madison. While in the school of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, I worked at Coventry House (a group home for girls ages 12-17) and then as a teacher for three years at Rome Corners Intermediate School in Oregon, Wisconsin. There I taught 6th grade and then 5th grade Language Arts and Social Studies. After earning my Master’s, I came home to Beloit and worked at BMHS as an administrator for the past two years which I enjoyed very much.
Many experiences have shaped the educator I have become and although I have traveled all over, I realize Beloit is exactly where I want to be (especially because this is where I met my husband, Mark; married on July 18th, 2009)! I am looking forward to an incredible year and many more at McNeel Middle School!
