Welcome to First Grade!
I look forward to working with your child this year. We need to celebrate the strengths your child has already has, and work towards gaining proficiency in areas of needed development.
This year your child will have the benefit of being in a classroom with two teachers. We will have interns from UW-Whitewater join us. Miss Dinkel will be here for the fall semester and Miss Smith will join our class for the spring semester.
Your child will learn lifelong strategies to become a successful reader. We focus on the strategies that will not only build strong word recognition, but also build strong comprehension of what he/she reads. Some of these strategies are: summarize, compare/contrast, predict/infer, visualize, and question.
In math your child will be learning concepts in the areas of mathematical process, number sense, measurement, computation, algebra, and statistics.
We have very specific goals to reach by the end of the year in all four core areas: Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Teachers and administrators have worked hard since last spring to articulate expected performances in these areas for each grade level. These are known as the "I Can" statements. You will become more familiar with these as the "I Can" flyers are distributed at the fall parent/teacher conferences.
If you have questions or concerns, I can be reached by either of the following two ways:
