Since reading The Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney (in the 2010-2011 school year) and approaching his principal, Garrison Voigt has been moved into action, it also moved me into a new realm- Wiki's and advising a student paper.
The students are very enthusiastic and love to meet. They are learning about keeping deadlines, editing and being responsible for something above and beyond their class work. Mrs. Kurth, having real life news paper experienced has joined me in advising the students.
This past month they contacted other teachers within the school to visit classrooms and demonstrate how to find the paper on-line.
Please take some time, post a comment and let them know what you think about their creation.
Peace,
Miss Westbury
January 2011
This exciting brainstorm is from the amazing mind of third grade student Garrison Voigt. After asking Dr. Pickett, principal at Cunningham Elementary, about producing a school newspaper Garrison was directed to me, Miss Westbury, to support and guide him. (Oh, boy! When I was in grade school the most advanced technology was a tv remote control and call waiting!) I asked Garrison to write down his ideas to discuss them.
Within a day or two, Garrison had written down his ideas; ready to roll. Within the week, Garrison had included his friend, Michael Frye, to assist in the design. Together, we are planning and getting ready to post the first e-dition of The Students' Paper. The name, content and pictures are all from their, the students', creation. Eventually, more students will be joining this venture. For now, in the planning stages, Garrison, Michael and I are testing out this wiki and blog idea. We look forward to hearing feedback and reading comments.
Changes in the School Year 2011-2012
Whoa! What a year! This school year is very different than last year, but in a great way! We have almost 80 students interested in working on our on-line paper this year! Each student has been assigned a month to show their creativity and boy have they ever! So, take a look, read around and enjoy what the students at Cunningham have been up to so far.
